This summer, Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation was delighted to welcome two New Zealand students, Will Davies and Brennan Matla, who took part in our life-changing Dormer Melluish Aldridge cricket scholarship programme.
Over the course of six months, Will and Brennan immersed themselves fully in the work of both the Foundation and the Club – coaching cricket and working with young people at Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation and representing a number of local West Sussex cricket clubs. Their time at Arundel was not only about cricket, but also about personal growth, new experiences and making memories that will last a lifetime.
Will and Brennan’s passion for cricket began at a young age back in New Zealand. Their selection for the Arundel scholarship programme recognised not only their talent but also their enthusiasm for coaching.
For both scholars, the programme marked the first time they had travelled so far from home, and the experience proved to be hugely inspiring and empowering. They embraced every opportunity both on and off the pitch. At ACCF, they demonstrated a real commitment to engaging with the diverse groups of young people who visited the Foundation over the summer. Whether delivering sessions for school groups, community groups or participants on our SEND programmes, both scholars brought energy and enthusiasm to working with young people.
“It’s been a roller coaster – I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It gives you a different perspective on life.”
Will Davies
“It’s been a great experience both playing cricket at my local club and working at the Foundation. Teaching kids from all sorts of different backgrounds and different abilities has been great.”
Brennan Matla
Their time in Sussex had many highlights, from coaching young people, to playing competitive cricket matches, to experiencing cricket match days at Arundel Castle Cricket Club, they have both contributed greatly to a very varied and rewarding summer.
Will and Brennan have been a wonderful addition to our team this summer, and we look forward to following their cricketing and personal journeys in the years ahead.
